I bought into the hype. I pre-ordered SOCOM Confrontation to get in on the beta play. It was ok, but full of bugs. I remained optimistic about the final game though - thinking this will be awesome when they get all these bugs fixed and it runs smoothly.
WRONG!
I wanted to play the game last night. I installed the game, which was too long. I had to update my PS3 firmware - again too long. Then I had to update a patch for the game. I was in a foul mood by this point. But finally, it looked like the game was going to start. It did. Then it had to load, which was way too long.
Made it into a game lobby - more loading. Joined a game, which was apparently “in progress” but I couldn’t tell that from the lobby. I waited more.
Finally, gameplay starts at the end of a round, which my team apparently lost. New round starts after waiting a bit more.
Sweet game play. Mic doesn’t work. Still haven’t figured this one out.
I killed a guy. Sweet.
Our team planted the bomb. The other team disarmed the bomb. Round over.
FREEZE!
Nothing works. PS button held for several seconds, X, O, R1, R2, Start? Nothing. Wait some more. Nothing.
Turned PS3 off in frustration.
Read review on Game Daily. They gave it a 5 out of 10. I’d call that generous at this point.
There’s a reason why I like XBox LIVE over PS3’s “free” online crap. Some things are worth paying for.
Come on Sony. You want people to shell out $400 for a piece of hardware and you think we’re too cheap to shell out $50/yr for online access.
There’s a reason why Microsoft is kicking your but this console generation. SOCOM Confrontation is a perfect example of why.
I want my $60 back.

Yes Microsoft is kicking Sony’s butt even though both consoles are selling at the same rate.
October 25th, 2008 @6:15 pm
btw… has anyone else noticed that this is his only blog about PS3??? and hes actually bashing it, while every other blog he has is about how great the wii+xbox is.

1 game sucks = console sucks. that’s some good logic

You Obviously dont understand that paying dosen’t increase the game’s performance, its server tweaks that are required to ensure network performance, this is how most online games are now days even ON PC !!!! - I agree Xbox LIVE is great, but it tends to lag and we pay for it, and its the features that we pay for, not the server, before publishing non-sense articles you should know better that all games take time to come around, it happened on all socoms, and it does on many titles.
PS…. All good things take time to come around.

Besides the bugs you love this game chump

Personally, your right about the PS3 console but you tend to forget that in 2 years Sony has launched a new console (with totally new technology) and launched their brand new online PSN service as well. M$ on the other hand has launched their console (with the same technology as their 1st console) three years ago which was released with known hardware problems but was still sold to consumers. They (Microsoft) has had 7 years to launch and perfect their online service. So of course M$’s XBL is better as they’ve had more time to perfect it.
As for Socom, you’re right again, Sony did drop the ball on this game. But as a true Socom gamer, I believe this title will be one of the greatest games that Sony has to offer (with quite a few patches & server fixes). I’m one that is willing to wait. Being a mature gamer in my late 30’s I’ve been use to waiting on M$ software for years, so I have learned over the years to have patience, something that the younger generation lacks these days!
I have had some of the same problems you have experienced but on the flip side, have had some of the most fun times with this same title (when it works). Underneath all the problems lies an amazing game that has one of the most realistic style of game play.
If you hate your PS3/Socom Conf. that much then sell it to me! I’ll take both! I already have 3 PS3’s but with my kids constantly fighting over the 3rd one, you selling me yours would definitely solve my problem.

This version of SOCOM is lame. I am HUGELY disappointed as this was one of the MAJOR reasons I bought a PS3. I don’t put much blame on SONY and their free PSN service. I put much more blame on Slant 6 and the severely crappy game they produced. There is SO much wrong in this game that even if it did work, it sucks. There are features in the manual that just don’t exist in the game and we are told “they are coming”. Really, you publish an incomplete game and we put up with that? They took ALL of the competitiveness out of this game by including side switching and an even number of rounds. There is no way to figure out what your team needs to do to win the game. Not to mention if you join a game mid round, you have no idea what the score is to know when you’ll switch sides or even when the game will end. They keep saying patches are coming to fix the game but honestly, I think it is beyond repair. Only another development cycle and a brand new game could fix this piece of crap.
This is all coming from a diehard SOCOM 1, 2, 3 and Combined Assault player. Looks like the only thing my PS3 will be doing is playing PS2 games.

your forgetting to look at the big picture and that it is SLANT6’s fault for the way SOCOM
October 25th, 2008 @8:31 pm
u have to give this game more time
this game needs one more month to fix all the issues
then I’m gonna buy it especially the blue tooth is so sweet
by the way Microsoft is not the perfect company loot at how many prod the xbox gets every month

your forgetting to look at the big picture here that it is SLANT6’s fault that SOCOM has turned out the way it has.
Sony had virtually no involvement in this game besides the fact they also put their name on it.
Slant6 servers are messed up. not sony’s, i’ve never agreed with paying 50 bucks a year to play online.
Madden online. Fine
Resistance online. Fine
Burnout, Rock Band, and many others. Fine online
your gonna sit here and bash the ps3 for a game they didnt create and say that the service is horrible cause one game didnt get it right.
people make me laugh.

you’re obviously a 360 fanboy
October 25th, 2008 @10:06 pm
@harrykid32 - You obviously haven’t played this game.
You know, I bought the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii with my own money. I paid $60 for a game that doesn’t live up to the hype. Heck, it isn’t even completely functional. Pardon me for criticizing something that doesn’t work as advertised.
How about trying the game and then offering a thoughtful comment next time instead of just whining?
October 25th, 2008 @11:31 pm
i agree that the game has a lot of online issues at launch, but actually as of now i rarely experience any problems at all. only sometimes the game half-freezes ( i can still quit the game and restart it). you are seriously a 360 fanboy that just wants to bash a game because its not on the 360.
and as for live, it has way more problems then psn, yes i said it, if you dont believe me look it up in a actual statistic (not a madeup fanboy statistic). i dont remember the actual percentage but it was around 30% more that live lags, and also are we forgetting the numerous times when live completly stop working (unscheduled). this has never happened on psn so shut up about live being more reliable, psn is the most reliable service, but live for now has maybe 2 or 3 features that psn doesnt have yet but will get
btw add me on psn: matizzy
and xbl: matizzy
but i rarely use my xbox so dont count on me signing on any time soon at least until ninja blade comes out

I agree,…
I loved the PS1 and PS2 but this PS3 has been wasted so far by poor management. Remember in Christmas of 2007 they said 2008 would be the year of the PS3. LOL, yeah right, what do we have to show for it? MGS4 and LBP, that’s not enough. SOCOM does suck, i was really excited about this, i played the beta thinking things would be better, nope. Game is garbage.
Oh and were is home, the advertise for it like its here.
Whatever Sony, your lame.

OK buddy u bash the PS3 for one game. So i have a question, Do you play Fable2 and Gears of war? In Fable 2 the framerate is poor and sometimes the game will glitch so bad that the game will freeze and you’ll have to start the whole game over again and dont get me started on Gears 2. Thats not even out yet and they have about 7 vids of glitches that can be done in gears 2. I hope your writing a review on that too
October 26th, 2008 @12:24 am
@Jac-Knife - Haven’t played Fable 2. Sounds bad.
I liked the first Gears of War. I hope Gears of War 2 can live up to the hype. I’ll be disappointed if it doesn’t.
October 26th, 2008 @2:04 pm
Socom is better then nearly every game on 360 also u must of went into the US servers their filled with lag all the other servers are fine and free is almost as good as pay I think I know what u would choose (free)
October 26th, 2008 @5:59 pm
Thanks “NOPE” for helping me with my comment.
I disagree,…
I loved the PS1 and PS2 but this PS3 I FUCKING LOVE IT. Remember in Christmas of 2007 they said 2008 would be the year of the PS3.Yeah it is! what do we have to show for it? MGS4,Resistance 2,LBP,Siren: Blood Curse,Infamous,Bioshock (PS3) that’s enough. SOCOM does not suck, i am really excited about this, i played the beta LOVE IT. Even with the bugs and glitches.
